Munich again

Saturday morning I left Salzburg in the opposite direction from which I came - back to Munich. A couple of hours later I was back at the hauptbahnhof and on the streetcar to the airport. Not to fly out this afternoon, but because I had booked myself into what is probably the most expensive hotel I've ever spent a night at (certainly the most expensive hotel room I've ever paid for myself): the Kempinski, a luxury multi-star hotel located between the two terminals of the airport. Since my flight was set to leave far before dawn and I had to check in before five in the morning, I figured the only thing more expensive than shelling out the big bucks to stay at this hotel was having to pay for a missed flight in the morning, since none of the transportation options starting running earlier enough to get me to the airport on time. From the Kempinski I could walk to the terminal in a couple of minutes.

I dropped my gear at the hotel and headed back into the center of town one more time. The snow had melted off, and even though it didn't quite feel like spring, it felt a lot less like winter than the weekend before. I got a snack and walked the neighborhood around the Marienplatz. Crowds were out on the weekend evening, and street performers vied for their attentions and their tips. In the center of the Marienplatz, a Catholic priest said mass while the faithful and the curious gathered around him. At the far end of the square, a busker played an accordion version of what sounded for all the world like the theme song to the Rocky movies.

I made one last circuit around the old city center, then got back on the streetcar to the airport. Tomorrow, back to London.
